Myths and Legends of Ancient Rome

By An Anthology · 2008

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This anthology gathers Roman foundation stories, divine tales, and civic legends drawn from writers such as Livy, Virgil, Ovid, and Plutarch. Typical matter includes Aeneas's flight from Troy, the twins Romulus and Remus, the Sabine women, the kings and early Republic, and the amours and quarrels of Jupiter, Juno, and the lesser gods. Lesser-known rites and superstitions sit beside the famous episodes. The pieces are presented as consecutive narratives for reading rather than as a critical edition. The collection is a survey of Roman myth and early legend, not a history of the Empire.
