First published in 1924, this autobiography follows Constantin Stanislavski from a wealthy Moscow childhood and amateur theatricals through the founding of the Moscow Art Theatre with Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. He recounts work on Chekhov and Gorky, the search for a truthful rehearsal method, tours, and the studio experiments that became his System: concentration, given circumstances, and the actor's inner life. Teachers, players, and failed productions occupy as much space as famous premieres. The book is a practitioner's life in the theatre, not a manual of exercises alone and not a history of all Russian drama.
