First published in 1930, this autobiography covers Winston Churchill's childhood, schooldays at Harrow, Sandhurst, and the years of imperial soldiering and journalism that followed. He writes of a cavalry posting in India, an expedition on the North-West Frontier, the Sudan campaign and Omdurman, and the South African War, including his capture and escape from a Boer prison. Parliamentary beginnings and the habits of a young officer sit beside the travel. The tone is first-person and anecdotal rather than a full political life. The book stops before the later offices; it is a memoir of youth and the late Victorian army, not a war history of 1914.
