First published in 1951, this novel is narrated by Philip Ashley, a young man raised on a Cornish estate by his cousin Ambrose. Ambrose marries Rachel in Italy and dies there after letters that hint at poison and persecution. Philip inherits, then receives Rachel herself, whose beauty, debts, and laburnum-scented gifts undo his certainty. He cannot decide whether she is a murderer or a widow maligned by a sick man's suspicion, and his own desire becomes part of the evidence. The book is a first-person tale of inheritance and doubt, not a detective novel with a final official verdict.
