This comedy, printed in 1600, is set in Messina after a war, when Don Pedro's party lodges with Leonato. Claudio falls for Hero and is deceived by Don John into believing her unchaste on the eve of their wedding. The same household's Beatrice and Benedick, sworn enemies of marriage, are tricked by their friends into confessing love for each other. The constable Dogberry and his watch stumble onto the plot that slandered Hero. The play is a prose-and-verse comedy of wit, rumor, and staged deaths, not a Roman history and not a tragedy of jealousy in the Othello manner.
