Published in 1925, this novel occupies a single June day in London as Clarissa Dalloway prepares to give an evening party. Walking to buy flowers, she remembers her youth at Bourton, her refusal of Peter Walsh, and her marriage to the MP Richard Dalloway; Peter, back from India, crosses her path. In another part of the city the shell-shocked clerk Septimus Warren Smith, with his wife Rezia, is driven toward a doctor and a crisis. The party's guests, including the prime minister and Clarissa's daughter Elizabeth, bring the two strands into one evening. The book is a stream-of-consciousness novel of memory, class, and postwar London.
