First published in 1939, this volume is a set of short stories, most of them cases for the amateur detective Albert Campion, sometimes with Superintendent Oates. Typical pieces involve jewel theft, blackmail, confidence tricks, a questionable death, or a young woman in a false position, played out in flats, country houses, and London streets of the late 1930s. Campion's method is talk, observation, and a network of slightly disreputable contacts rather than laboratory work. Later editions drop the non-Campion tales and add further Campion stories. The book is a miscellany of separate puzzles, not a novel.
