Synopsis

This comic fantasy, a Discworld novel, follows Mort, an awkward farm boy whom Death takes on as an apprentice. Mort learns to ride the pale horse, speak the formal language of the departed, and collect souls according to the books in Death's house, while Death himself experiments with time off among humans. Assigned to a princess whose hour has come, Mort interferes, splitting the world between what is scheduled and what he has allowed to continue. Albert, the old servant, and Ysabell, Death's adopted daughter, are the household he must live with. The book is a comic apprenticeship story about duty and the running of mortality.
