First published in 1955, this novel sends James Bond to investigate Sir Hugo Drax, a public hero who is building the Moonraker, a nuclear rocket meant to defend Britain, at a cliff site on the Kent coast. Bond is first called in over a card-cheating affair at Blades, then attached to the project after a security death among Drax's German technical staff. With the Ministry agent Gala Brand he finds that the rocket, the staff, and Drax's wartime past do not match the official story. The action stays in London clubs and the Dover cliffs rather than abroad. The book is a Cold War spy novel about a weapon built on English ground.
