First published in 1898, this adventure novel is narrated by John Trenchard, who grows up in the Dorset coastal village of Moonfleet in the 1750s. The parish church, the Mohune vault, and the Why Not? inn sit above a beach used by smugglers. John, searching for the legendary diamond of the wicked Colonel John Mohune, called Blackbeard, is drawn into the contraband trade under the innkeeper Elzevir Block after a death in the vault. Excisemen, a rival landing, and a hunt for the jewel drive them from the village to prison and the sea. The book is a smuggling and treasure story bound to one parish and one cursed family.
