Montaillou
Cathars and Catholics in a French Village 1294: 1324
By Emmanuel le Roy Ladurie · 2004
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1975, this study reconstructs daily life in the Pyrenean village of Montaillou around 1300 from the Latin inquisition register of Bishop Jacques Fournier. The villagers, many of them shepherds and small holders, are questioned about Cathar belief, sex, work, and neighbours; their answers become a village ethnography. Central figures include the priest Pierre Clergue, the chatelaine Beatrice de Planissoles, and the shepherd Pierre Maury, whose seasonal routes link the Sabarthes to Catalonia. Ladurie arranges the material by house, body, time, and the occult rather than as a trial narrative. The book is a microhistory of a heretical mountain community, not a general history of the Albigensian crusade.
