This is an English abridgement of the sixteenth-century Chinese novel Journey to the West. A stone-born Monkey King wins magic, storms Heaven, and is imprisoned under a mountain until the monk Tripitaka is sent from Tang China to fetch Buddhist scriptures from India. Monkey, with the glutton Pigsy and the river-ogre Sandy, escorts the pilgrim through a chain of monsters, false immortals, and tempted kingdoms. The comedy is of appetite, pride, and official Heaven's bureaucracy; the pilgrimage is the frame. The work is a comic-religious adventure, not a single realistic plot. This shortened form, commonly titled Monkey, follows the main westward road rather than the full hundred-chapter original.
