First published in 1946, this novel is set at Leys, an English physical-training college for women, in the weeks before the students leave for posts. Lucy Pym, a popular psychologist and former schoolfellow of the principal, comes as a guest and watches the final examinations, the friendships, and the rivalry for a prized demonstration appointment. Among the seniors are Mary Innes, her weaker friend whom the staff must place, and the games mistresses who control futures. When a fatal accident occurs in the gymnasium after the posts are announced, Lucy has to decide what she saw and what she owes the college. The book is a closed-community crime novel about merit, favour, and responsibility.
