First published in 1974, this study follows Michelangelo Buonarroti from his training in Florence through the Roman years, the Medici commissions, and the late work as painter, sculptor, and architect. Hibbard reads the early Pieta and David, the Julius tomb, the Sistine ceiling and Last Judgement, the Medici chapel, and the rebuilding of St Peter's against contracts, letters, poems, and the earliest lives. He treats unfinished marble and changed plans as evidence of how the artist worked under popes and republican governments. The book is a chronological account of the work and the career, not a picture album without argument.
