This is an English abridgement of the Venetian Niccolao Manucci's long account of India in the later seventeenth century. Manucci, who served as a soldier and then as a physician around the Mughal court, describes the last years of Shah Jahan, the war of succession among his sons, and the reign of Aurangzeb: ceremonies, harems, campaigns, and the daily traffic of envoys and adventurers. He records Hindu and Muslim customs as a resident foreigner saw them, and he places himself in intrigues he claims to have survived. The book is a traveller's court chronicle, not an official Mughal history.
