Written in the early eighteenth century by Anthony Hamilton, these memoirs recount the career of Philibert, comte de Gramont, Hamilton's brother-in-law. The first movement covers Gramont's youth, gambling, and disgrace at the French court; the longer English section follows him into the Restoration circle of Charles II, where wits, mistresses, and place-hunters compete. Hamilton draws portraits of the king, the duke of York, and the women of Whitehall, and he ends with Gramont's marriage to Hamilton's sister. The book is a gallery of court anecdote and character, not a military or diplomatic history of either reign.
