First issued at the end of the nineteenth century, this autobiography follows Peter Kropotkin from a princely Moscow childhood and the Corps of Pages into military service in Siberia, where survey work and the condition of peasants and prisoners turn him against the autocracy. He recounts scientific travel, entry into radical circles, arrest, a celebrated escape from hospital detention, and years among anarchist groups in Switzerland and England. Portraits of militants and of tsarist prisons sit beside explanations of mutual aid and communal economics. The book is a political life told in the first person, not a systematic treatise on anarchism.
