These are the naval memoirs of Thomas Cochrane, later Earl of Dundonald, recounting his service as a frigate captain in the wars against France and Spain. He describes early cruises, the capture of heavier opponents by the brig Speedy, inshore work along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, and the attack on the French fleet in the Basque Roads. Later chapters turn to his radical politics in Parliament, the stock-exchange prosecution that broke his British career, and his subsequent commands in the independence struggles of Chile, Peru, and Brazil. The book is a first-person record of tactics and grievance, not a full history of those wars.
