A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy
By Laurence Sterne · 1949
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1768, this unfinished travel tale follows the parson Yorick through France, and barely into Italy, in the 1760s. Instead of itineraries and monuments he records brief encounters-a monk at Calais, a fille de chambre, a glove-seller, a caged starling-and tests his own sentimental responses against what he actually does. The narration is digressive, addressing the reader and breaking off scenes at the point of embarrassment or desire. The book is a comic essay on feeling and manners, written as a journey but not organised as a guidebook.
