First published in 1975 from lectures Power left at her death, this history describes the lives of women in medieval Europe through three social types: the lady of the manor, the working woman in town and country, and the nun. Power uses household accounts, guild records, visitation reports, and literature to show work, marriage, enclosure, and the ideas men wrote about female nature. The chapters are essays rather than biographies of famous queens. The book is a social-historical study, not a novel and not a complete survey of every medieval kingdom.
