This is a survey of Western Europe from the decline of the late Roman world to the threshold of the sixteenth century. It treats the Middle Ages as a civilisation rather than a chain of reigns: how people imagined time and space, how they produced food and goods, how lords, peasants, clergy, and townsmen were ranked, and how Christianity organised belief, fear, and festivity. Chapters move through invasions, the rise of feudal bonds, the growth of cities and schools, and late-medieval crises of plague and schism. Material life and mental habits matter as much as kings. The book is a synthesis of social and cultural history, not a chronicle of battles.
