This comedy, written in the early seventeenth century, is set in Vienna, where Duke Vincentio announces a departure and leaves government to the strict deputy Angelo. Angelo revives old laws against fornication and condemns Claudio to death for getting Julietta with child. Claudio's sister Isabella, a novice, pleads for his life; Angelo offers a bargain that would cost her chastity. The Duke remains in the city disguised as a friar, watching the deputy, the bawd Pompey, the constable Elbow, and the condemned Barnardine, and arranging substitutions. The play examines justice, mercy, and sexual hypocrisy in a city of prisons and convents.
