This history follows the English Separatists who crossed the Atlantic in the Mayflower and founded Plymouth Colony, then traces the settlement through two generations of contact, trade, and war with the Wampanoag and neighbouring peoples. The narrative moves from the Leiden years and the ocean crossing to the first winters, the compact, and the alliances made by Massasoit, Squanto, and the Bradford and Winslow households. Later chapters turn on land hunger, missionary pressure, and the breakdown that becomes King Philip's War, with its raids, captivities, and aftermath across New England. The book is a narrative history of a colony and a war, not a genealogy or a sermon.
