First published in 1934, this children's novel is set in Cherry Tree Lane, London, where Mr and Mrs Banks advertise for a nanny after the previous one leaves. Mary Poppins arrives on the east wind, takes charge of Jane, Michael, and the infants, and runs the nursery with sharp manners and powers she will not explain. Outings that look ordinary - a visit to her uncle, an afternoon in the park, shopping, tea with a pavement artist - become episodes of floating, talking animals, and rearranged stars. The children cannot predict her, and she denies every marvel afterward. The book is a sequence of household adventures, not a school story.
