First published in 1969, this biography follows Mary Stuart from her infancy as Queen of Scots through childhood in the French court, marriage to Francis II, and return to a reformed Scotland. Fraser recounts the Darnley marriage, the murder of Riccio, Darnley's death at Kirk o' Field, the Bothwell marriage, forced abdication, flight to England, and the long captivity under Elizabeth I that ends at Fotheringhay. Politics in Edinburgh, Paris, and London are treated alongside Mary's household and faith. The book is a life of one sixteenth-century queen, written from letters and state papers, not a general history of the British Isles.
