First issued in parts from 1843 to 1844, this novel tracks the Chuzzlewit clan as old Martin, rich and suspicious, tests the relatives who circle him. Young Martin is turned away after attaching himself to Mary Graham and goes to America with the cheerful Mark Tapley, where land schemes and swamp fever punish his pride. In England the architect Pecksniff poses as a moral tutor, Tom Pinch serves him loyally, Jonas pursues money into crime, and the nurse Sarah Gamp talks through a fog of gin. The book is a comic-satirical novel of selfishness, not a travel report on the United States.
