Issued in four volumes between 1933 and 1938, this biography follows John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, from a penniless Restoration courtier to the commander of the Grand Alliance in the War of the Spanish Succession. The narrative traces the years under James II, the Revolution of 1688, the uneasy service under William III, and the campaigns of Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde, and Malplaquet, together with the political fall engineered at Queen Anne's court. Sarah Churchill and parliamentary faction are treated as part of the same story as the Flanders marches. The book is a military and political life written against earlier Whig attacks on its subject.
