Synopsis

Published in 1814, this novel follows Fanny Price, a poor niece brought up at Mansfield Park among the Bertram family. Sir Thomas's children, especially Edmund, shape her education; the worldly Crawfords, Henry and Mary, arrive and unsettle the house with private theatricals and courtships. Fanny quietly loves Edmund, refuses a proposal that would please her uncle, and is sent back to her crowded Portsmouth home as a lesson. The plot turns on who may act, who may marry, and what the estate requires of its dependents. It is a novel of manners about conscience and household authority, not a romance of the marriage market alone.
