This volume pairs two mid-twentieth-century travel books about Greece. Mani follows a journey on foot and by boat through the remote Mani peninsula of the southern Peloponnese: tower villages, blood-feud families, Byzantine churches, and a coast still reached with difficulty. Roumeli moves north of the Gulf of Corinth through Missolonghi, the Kravara, Sarakatsani shepherds' camps, and monastic or mountain districts that the author treats as a mainland counterpart to the deep south. Both books mix walking narrative with local history, song, and conversation. They are travel literature rather than political reportage, concerned with landscape and customary life.
