First published in 1908, this novel opens at a Florentine pension where Lucy Honeychurch, travelling with her cousin Charlotte Bartlett, is denied the promised view and is offered rooms instead by the English Emersons, a father and son. In the city Lucy encounters violence in a square and a kiss in the countryside; back in Surrey she becomes engaged to the cultivated Cecil Vyse. George Emerson reappears among her suburban circle. The conflict is between the spontaneity associated with Italy and the codes of Surrey drawing-rooms, as Lucy is pressed to name what she wants.
