This anthology collects short extracts from travel writing, grouped by region and roughly by date. Newby draws more than three hundred passages from ancient geographers, medieval pilgrims, early modern sailors, Victorian explorers, and later tourists and journalists, mixing famous names with obscure witnesses. Typical subjects are first sight of a city or wilderness, hardship, food, manners, and the shock of other customs. The pieces are independent; there is no continuous journey and no single traveller. The book is a reader in travel testimony, not one person's narrative and not a geography textbook.
